A blending of function and whimsy

Great attention to detail was given to the design of this tudor-craftsman style home. Driven by the personalities and hobbies of the homeowners, the basement design has a room specific to brewing beer as well as an artist studio. The walls on the lower level are thicker than needed to give a feeling of permanence. From the upper floor, spectacular views overlook Bellingham Bay below.

Upscale Country

Sheltered from the street, this inviting home embraces the landscape it sits on. There’s evidence of thoughtful design throughout the house.

With a shallow footprint, light-shelves, and high ceilings, natural light floods the house throughout the day. The chimney acts as a trombe wall, giving natural heat to the home. L-shaped, the public space is located towards the front of the house with the private space towards the back of the home. With plenty of large windows throughout the home, the inhabitants experience a constant connection to the outside throughout the day. Adjacent to the residence is a garage, which frames a cozy yard space for gathering.

The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on site is close to the house yet far enough to give privacy for both spaces. With it’s own mini-kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities the space is self-sufficient. Tall ceilings help add to the feeling of spaciousness in this compact 20’x20’ cube. Space is maximized with a loft above the bathroom. This little unit makes a great guest quarters, can be rented out separately, or can even be used to run an architecture office.

Features: Radiant floor heat • Metal clad wood windows • Rain water collection • Detached 2-car garage • Main home: 2,600 Sq.Ft. Guest house: 500 Sq.Ft.

Lakeside Living

This spec home is located in the Lake Whatcom watershed which both affected the footprint of the building and the orientation on the site.

Building strategies were aimed towards net-zero and worked to achieve LEED certification. With a steel floating staircase at the center of the house and views directed to the southeast, the home has a nice open feel to it.

Nestled into the hillside, the garage is tucked into the ground floor. The main entry is accessed above, from the street level, under a cantilevered green roof. The entrance opens onto the main living space. With large windows directed towards the expansive views and high ceilings, the space feels much larger than it is. The sleek looking kitchen is complete with all of the modern amenities and opens onto the living space that is complete with a fireplace. Upstairs, three bedrooms with vaulted ceilings finish out the home.

Features:  3 bedrooms + office • 2 car garage • 3 stories • Natural materials • 3,110 sq. ft.

Outdoor Connection

This custom residence is traditional Japanese in both layout and construction.

Wood columns were scribed onto rocks to form the foundation. Underneath the house is a sauna as well as a cellar for food storage. A combination of stucco and cedar clad the exterior. Future plans include building a main house and tea house, which will form a courtyard with the guest house. With vaulted ceilings, skylights, lots of windows, and an open floor plan, the space feels much larger than it is and allows for a constant visual connection to the outside surroundings. The living space is surrounded by a wrap-around covered porch.

Features: Open studio layout • Steam shower in master suite • 2-car garage • Wrap-around covered porch • 1,300 Sq.Ft.
