The Whatcom Housing Alliance recently opened a public competition to source ideas for the design of accessory dwelling units. The purpose  is to increase awareness of the ADUs. They believe hosting a competition with foster ideas about what an ADU can be and to give anyone a platform to share their insights. I think we will surely see some clever and creative ideas presented. We can’t wait!

You probably know that, we, at Haven Design Workshop see ADU’s as a vital part of the development mix going forward. Both in Whatcom County and beyond, ADU’s are gaining popularity. Take a look at our earlier blog post for more. We have decided to put together two teams for some friendly inter-office competition. The prompt heavily weighs accessibility in the scoring criteria so both groups have chosen to address that as a central pillar to the project. Our early design charrettes have come up with several variants and approaches to the challenge. As we refine them, I think we are going see see some really nice proposals develop.

If you have some ideas of your own, we invite you to join us in the contest! Here is the prompt. If you want to follow along with HDW’s process, we will be adding posts on Instagram and in this blog. Another option, if you are ready to develop an ADU on your property is to reach out to us for a consultation. We can probably give you some insight or advice based on our experience in the sector.
